Enginely Stage, the mind map for meetings over Zoom, imports a Markdown outline as a mind map and exports it back without loss. A # heading is the central topic, ## headings and bullets are branches, and a checkbox ending in (owner, due) is an action item. Drag the .md file onto the editor.
| In the file | On the map |
|---|---|
# Title | The central topic, also the document title |
## and deeper headings | Branches |
-, *, +, 1. bullets | Nodes, nested by 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs |
- [ ] and - [x] | Not done and done |
Trailing (sam, 2026-11-15) | Owner and due date; (sam) and (2026-11-15) work too |
| A paragraph under a bullet or heading | The node's note |
## Parking lot | Fills the parking lot |
[P1], [flag], [?], [*] | Markers: priority, flag, question, star |
With no # heading, the file name becomes the root. Every import creates a new document, so it never overwrites the map you had open.

That file imports as a map with one flag, an action item with an owner chip and date, a note and one parked item.
Press Cmd/Ctrl K, type export and choose Export as Markdown. The file is named from the title, so Q4 plan: review becomes Q4-plan-review.md. It holds the # title, nested bullets in tree order and notes as indented paragraphs. Then come ## Parking lot and ## Action items, written as - [ ] text (owner, due) and ordered by due date.
Only styling. The checkbox and (owner, due) also sit on the node's own bullet, so the file imports back intact. Bold, color overrides and custom widths are not written to Markdown; use OPML for those.
Export as OPML writes OPML 2.0 with notes, owner, due date, done and the full style (bold, color, marker, width); the parking lot is an outline marked parkingLot="true". Import is the inverse, and several top-level outlines go under a root named after the file's title.
Related: action items in a meeting and opening .xmind files.
No. Every import creates a new document, and the previous map stays in Open recent document.
Only styling that Markdown cannot hold: bold, color overrides and custom widths. Structure, notes, owners, due dates, done state, markers and the parking lot are kept.
Yes, if it is a Markdown outline or an OPML file. Several top-level OPML outlines are grouped under a root named after the file.
End a checkbox line with (owner, date), for example - [ ] Send the deck (sam, 2026-11-15).
